HSE AI and Automation Centre of Excellent (CoE)

The AI and Automation Centre of Excellence (CoE) facilitates the seamless adoption of AI and Automation solutions from inception to business as usual. 

Whether procuring or developing solutions with approved vendors, the CoE provides expert guidance on best practices, risk management, vendor selection, and solution governance. Supporting every stage of the journey, the CoE assists with the process to gather and document requirements, design and prototype solutions, and collaborate with vendors to enable high-quality development.

Support the adoption of trustworthy artificial intelligence and automation technologies to deliver enhanced patient care and an empowered healthcare workforce.

Purpose

The CoE Supports the organisation to harness the benefits of AI and the automation technologies safely and responsibly. The CoE guides and enables the adoption of AI solutions to adhere with the organisations AI frameworks and applicable regulatory frameworks, to ensure that AI technology is deployed and used ethically, legally, transparently and securely.

  • Governance and Compliance- the CoE supports the responsible deployment of AI and Automation solutions by providing governance frameworks, guidance on standards, and best practices. It enables monitoring of compliance with regulatory and ethical guidelines, including the EU AI Act, and supports adherence to HSE policies, ethical considerations, and legal requirements.
  • AI and Automation Opportunities Identification- Working closely with the HSE regions and approved vendors, the CoE provide support for AI and Automation solutions by conducting solutions researched, viability assessment, and assessing compliance, scalability, and complexity. It provides expert guidance on selecting appropriate technology and enabling alignment with strategic goals.
  • Technical and Development Standards- the CoE maintains technical, usage and development standards to enable interoperability, security, scalability, and compliance across AI and Automation solutions. It develops reusable components, establishes standard practices for application lifecycle management, and provides support to internal and external development teams.
  • AI and Automation Operations Management- The CoE actively manages operations, including capacity planning, deployment, performance reporting, and incident and change management. It also provides quality assurance through code review. For AI solutions, the CoE supports operational oversight, monitoring performance, reclassification and facilitating issue resolution with approved vendors.
  • Relationship Management- the CoE manages approved vendors relationships and supports ongoing engagements. It assists with business case development and funding requests, provides technical solution design support, and facilitates a community of practices to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across HSE teams.
