HSE Welcomes EU Council Adoption of European Health Data Space Regulations

The HSE Technology and Transformation division is pleased to announce that the EU Council has officially adopted the Regulation on the European Health Data Space (EHDS), marking a significant milestone in advancing digital health and cross-border health data exchanges.

The EHDS aims to facilitate the safe, secure, and standardised sharing of health data among EU member states. This landmark regulation is designed to empower patients, improve healthcare delivery, and advance health research by enabling seamless access to and exchange of health data across borders.

In alignment with the EHDS objectives, the HSE is actively participating in the MyHealth@EU initiative. MyHealth@EU is an EU-wide project focused on promoting interoperability among national health systems to enhance healthcare access for citizens traveling within Europe.

Key components of MyHealth@EU include:

  • Interoperability: Establishing EU standards and guidelines to ensure different health systems can communicate and share data securely and efficiently.
  • Electronic Health Records (EHRs): Encouraging the adoption and integration of EHRs to consolidate patient information, making it accessible to healthcare providers across borders.
  • Telemedicine and Remote Monitoring: Supporting tools and solutions that enable remote consultations and healthcare services, improving accessibility, especially in rural or underserved areas.
  • Data Security and Privacy: Maintaining robust security measures to safeguard patient data while ensuring compliance with regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Innovation and Research: Fostering the development of innovative digital health solutions and supporting research to continually improve healthcare practices and technologies.

The HSE is committed to implementing these components to enhance patient care, streamline healthcare processes, and support medical research. By participating in MyHealth@EU, the HSE aims to ensure that Irish citizens traveling within the EU receive consistent and informed healthcare, and that EU citizens visiting Ireland can access necessary health services seamlessly.

The adoption of the EHDS represents an exciting opportunity for healthcare systems across Europe to collaborate more effectively. The HSE looks forward to working within this framework to advance the delivery of modern, patient-centered digital healthcare solutions.
