Virtual Wards: A leap forward in Patient Care

On 14th June, 2024 Virtual Wards, a new digital initiative, was announced for cardiology and respiratory patients of St. Vincent's University Hospital (SVUH) and University Hospital Limerick (UHL), the technology aspect spearheaded by our Telehealth Team under the direction of Programme Manager Julie Bellew.

This innovative digital initiative provides a safe and efficient alternative to hospital stays, allowing patients to receive expert care, monitoring, and treatment in their own homes. Launching later this month, Virtual Wards will initially cater to patients with respiratory or cardiac conditions who are medically stable but still require continuous monitoring.

Working closely with the Digital Health Clinical Office, Office of the CCO and local implementation teams in both hospitals, the Telehealth Team’s leadership has been instrumental in making this service a reality, empowering patients to be active participants in their healthcare while reducing the strain on hospital resources.

This initiative not only supports patient recovery at home but also helps mitigate the risks associated with hospital stays, such as infections and muscle strength loss.
