In 2016 Ireland became the 29th member of SNOMED International. SNOMED CT is the clinical terminology for use in electronic health records. It allows for clinical data to be recorded, stored, retrieved and managed for analytics in a standardised, reusable format. This ensures consistency of healthcare data during transmission from one system to another.

In 2017 the HSE established a Governance Board with HIQA chairing the group and Department of Health as vice chair, other members represented were the Health and Research Board, Chief Clinical Information Officer, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Information Officer, Health and Social Care Professionals, GPIT, Information Governance, Head of Enterprise Architecture, Technical, Business and Information architects, as well as the Clinical Terminology Architecture Lead. At that time a one-year strategy was put in place in order to commence work in this area.

Now in 2020 after 18 months of consultation with the various stakeholders the Irish SNOMED Governance Board would like to present the SNOMED CT Strategy on behalf of the Irish National Release Centre. This strategy has 3 strategic goals, develop experts in SNOMED, rigorous focus on quality and ensure SNOMED adoption. With the back drop of COVID 19, the need to be ready for the digital era for clinical terminology has never been greater. This strategy is well placed to meet the needs of the organisation at this time.
