Tallaght University Hospital & TU Dublin Health Hackathon results
On the 7th and 8th June, TU Dublin in partnership with Tallaght University Hospital hosted a ‘Health Hackathon’ with the support of Amazon Web Services. The event which saw computing students from TU Dublin Tallaght Campus presented with six challenges and were given 24 hours to research, investigate the architecture and present and pitch their solution to the challenge.
The 19 participating students were divided into seven teams with the judges being very impressed by the research they had undertaken in such a short time period and the understanding of the challenge they demonstrated in their proposed solutions.
1st Prize

This team presented on an Infogram for patients waiting to be see in the Emergency Department that would display the waiting time for the different category of patients as well as providing health information relevant to the profile of people waiting to be seen.

This team presented on the challenge people with mild and significant memory problems have with remembering to take their medications at the times that they should and the challenges this presents to carers. They presented on the creation of a ‘tray of truth’ which would support people with memory difficulties reminding them to take their medications and inform their carers as well as themselves as to whether they have taken their medication or not.

This team looked at the challenge of elderly patients that are at risk of falling when in hospital. They looked at electronic solutions for patients that are confused / disorientated and are at a greater risk of having a fall as they are in an unfamiliar environment.
About Tallaght University Hospital
TUH is one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospitals, adult, psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site. The Hospital has 495 adult beds with 3,000 people on staff. The Hospital is a provider of local, regional and national specialties. It is also a national urology centre, the second largest provider of dialysis services in the country and a regional orthopaedic trauma centre. The Hospital also has 67 paediatric beds under the governance of Children’s Health Ireland and 52 mental health beds under HSE governance.
TUH is one of the two main teaching hospitals of Trinity College Dublin - specialising in the training and professional development of staff in areas such as nursing, health and social care professionals, emergency medicine and surgery, amongst many others. TUH is part of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties.
A new paediatric outpatient and urgent care centre is to be built at TUH as part of the Children’s Health Ireland project as a key element of an integrated clinical network for paediatric services nationally. The Hospital’s Emergency Departments catered for 51,084 Adult Attendance and 32,424 Paediatric Attendance in 2018. A further 267,623 patients were treated through the Hospital’s Adult and Paediatric outpatient clinics in 2018. The Hospital’s operations are supported by 200 general practitioners in surrounding communities and aligned with Community Health Organisation 7.
